Firstly, contact the Inter-Library Loans team to let us know which book you have lost, so we can keep the lending library informed. Usually there are two options for resolving lost items:

  • either you provide a replacement copy (same edition to the one we borrowed and in good condition) which we sent to the other library as a straight swap.
  • or else we ask the other library to bill us for the loss.

If we borrowed the book from the British Library, then they have a standard lost item fee of £236.00, on top of which we would add any fines and a £10.00 handling cost. Other libraries charge different amounts depending on their local arrangements.

If you can provide a replacement copy, then we would just charge any outstanding fines (if the loan was listed as overdue when you contacted us).
