Durham University has not implemented the Rights Retention Approach, and its Research Publications Policy, in isolation.

Following the launch of the Rights Retention Strategy by cOAlition-S in 2021, Edinburgh University published their Research Publications & Copyright Policy on 1 January 2022. Cambridge University also launched their Rights Retention Pilot in 2022, and other Universities including Aberdeen, Sheffield Hallam University and St Andrew’s University followed with their own policies in the same year.

Durham University, as a member of the N8 Research Consortium, is launching its policy alongside the universities of Lancaster, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Newcastle, Sheffield and York, following the widely publicised N8 Rights Retention Strategy announcement of 24th January 2023 (as widely covered in the Times Higher Educational Supplement [paywalled article] on the same date).

As at September 2023, 21 UK and European institutions have announced or published policies in support of a Rights Retention Approach, with many others (including Aston, Birmingham, Cranfield, Keele, Leicester, Loughborough, Nottingham and Warwick as part of the Midland Innovation group) announcing policies in development.
